East Dallas

The hilly terrain and winding streets create a setting that is an architect’s dream.

Welcome to East Dallas

Set along the rolling shoreline of the 1,000+ acre White Rock Lake, the Lakewood and East Dallas neighborhoods are a natural draw for the city’s many outdoor enthusiasts. Each year, thousands of people visit the lake to take advantage of its nearly 10 miles of paved hiking and biking trails, ball fields, nature and dog parks, and opportunities for bird watching. The lake is also home to Dallas United Crew and Corinthian Sailing Club, as well as the popular Bath House Cultural Center.

Surrounding the lake are several personality-rich neighborhoods featuring beautifully designed and architecturally diverse homes. The hilly terrain and winding streets create a setting that is an architect’s dream. Notable names such as Clifford Hutsell, O’Neil Ford, and Charles Dilbeck built signature residences that bring both history and provenance to the area. Today, this ideal setting attracts contemporary new construction with open spaces and plenty of windows from which to view the verdant topography.

The East Dallas and Lakewood neighborhoods are typically considered to fall south of East Mockingbird and the North Central Expressway. The collection of neighborhoods reach almost to Interstate 30 and as far east as Garland Road. Residents enjoy many public and private school opportunities, with Woodrow Wilson High School and its highly regarded theater and International Baccalaureate programs among the most popular.

Its close proximity to downtown Dallas, the Arts District, SMU, and Deep Ellum means that the neighborhoods of Lakewood and East Dallas are home to artists, attorneys, doctors, and academics. The retail and dining hub of the area is the Lakewood Shopping Center where residents meet up for dinner or a round of golf across the street at the Lakewood Country Club. Nearby, more than one million people a year visit the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, featuring the most famous gardens in Dallas known for its special exhibits and events.

In addition to Lakewood, other East Dallas neighborhoods to consider include Junius Heights, Munger Place Historic District, Swiss Avenue, Hollywood Heights, the M Streets, and Vickery Place.
